Things to know

Who can buy a rail pass?

Any person living outside the participating countries can use the Swiss Travel Pass. Please note that residents of Switzerland and Liechtenstein are not eligible.

Seat Reservation

A seat reservation is a guaranteed seat on board a train.

Seat reservations are compulsory for high speed, international and night trains. However, as you will be travelling with a rail pass, you will only have to pay for a small reservation fee, as opposed to the usual standard fare.

Seats are generally available for reservation up to 90 days prior to departure and are limited. Book early to secure your seat!
We are not currently offering online seat reservations for high speed, international and night trains covered by the BritRail passes. You can book your seat reservation directly from train stations once you are in the United Kingdom.

Our tip:
Most regional trains do not require a seat reservation. Just hop on board with a valid rail pass, find a seat and relax as the train takes you to one of the many destinations served.

  • "It runs like clockwork"
Its been said before that the trains always run on time, they do and so do most of the buses all of the time. Rail Europe has all the information on the rail systems and with it you can bank on the right ticket at the right price. Single tickets v Rail Passes may suit some but for most of us the ease of changing one's mind and doing something different on the day make rail passes the better choice. Planning a trip is so easy given the wealth of available information.    Value for money  Convenience
  • "Complete piece of mind."
Only request is to also include all mountain trains in the pass to make the journey more comfortable and best value for money.    Value for money  Convenience
  • "easy travel"
Everything was very satisfactory including assistance at the stations. But we faced problem with luggage space in the train and there was not enough leg space in the train.    Value for money  Convenience
  • "Wonderful "
Swiss Travel Pass was very easy to use. During my 14 days in Swiss, I travelled using the Swiss Pass and the timing of the trains were on time. Train comfort was good and it was easy to move around even for a tourist like me. In terms of improvement, can be better in terms of cleanliness on train and the WC. Overall, I would rate it as very good!    Value for money  Convenience
  • "8 day Swiss Pass is great"
Our trip took us from Zurich (on business) to the Alps (Interlaken and Wengen), to Bern, to Basel. The train schedule between these locations was prompt, and generally left every half- or every hour. Having the flexibility to switch trains, change plans, move between cities or on the local trains, trams and bus, and having the benefit of reduced rates in the mountains...this was great. I cannot imagine the stress of such a trip if we were trying to keep a strict schedule...we had an 8 month old baby with us! The only challenge was getting the stroller onto some trains, but the other passengers were generally very helpful, helping us to lift the stroller onto the trains if we needed it. Super impressed and we will do this again.    Value for money  Convenience
  • "a exellent way to get around!"
easy to follow, and the station in Lucerne was a GEM!! Make sure you exploit all the options yourself, as the staff is not always totally up to speed. the trains were up to date and the Boat trip was fabulous, food and drinks was just exspensive on board! the Pilatus trip was a must do, althouhg certain legs on the trip cost xtra The best was the bernina exspress! beautiful train and exellent staff! we had a bad exsperience on the way to Nice with an unhelpfull conducter when our bag was snatched, but we got it back,    Value for money  Convenience

Super convenient and comfortable way of travel within Europe between cities. Pluses - stations within the city, no hassles of airport check in, security etc., getting around is easy, luggage racks make for easy stowage, superfast trains ensure a scenic journey to your destinations. Minuses - watch out for the confusing numbering systems of platforms in some cities    Value for money  Convenience

It is extremely easy to use the train!    Value for money  Convenience
  • "Swiss Rail System"
The Swiss First Class pass suggested by my wife turned out to be an outstanding experience. Very few persons use First class so reservations were never needed. The Glacier express was excellent though we found Bernina express route much more picturesque. Travel 26-28 Sep 2015.    Value for money  Convenience
