The world’s largest Gothic building, the incredible Papal Palace, is made entirely from stone, ornate spires and all. The UNESCO accredited remains of the nearby 12th century Pont Saint-Benezet Bridge harbour an interesting history worthy of your investigation.

Retail Therapy

Maneuver the maze of narrow streets and find the Place Pie, a covered market selling fresh produce, cheese and wine. On Sundays browse the morning flea market at Place des Carmes, you’re sure to find some hidden treasure.

Eat and Drink

Provençal olive oil, tomatoes and herbs are the key to Avignon’s cuisine, and there are plenty of restaurants to experience them in. The atmospheric Rue des Teinturiers is lined with cheap eateries and bars – as the night progresses move to the trendy Rue Carnot and Place des Corps-Saints.

Hidden Gem

Seek shade in the Rocher des Doms Park and Gardens up the street to the side of the cathedral. Check out the various water features, ducks and peacocks, and enjoy the sprawling views across the River Rhône.
