While you're there

Salzburg is the fourth largest of Austria. It is located on the banks of Salzach river, near the German borders and north of the Alps. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salzburg is famed for its old world glamour, made all the more striking by the majestic backdrop of snow-capped Alps.

Over 4,000 events are held each year including the Easter, Whitsun and Summer Festivals, Dialogs at the Mozarteum, the Sommerszene, Jazz Festival, Culture Days and Advent Singing. A multitude of museums, galleries, sculptures and exhibitions promise an unlimited cultural experience.

Salzburg has one of the finest preserved medieval old towns in Europe, criss-crossed with romantic winding shopping streets and venerable market places and adorned with outstanding architectural monuments of the later baroque era. Piazzas and fountains, the stunning Domkirche Cathedral, palaces, pleasure gardens, churches, monasteries and catacombs, confectionaries and patisseries, the oldest restaurant in the continent. And towering above it all, the breathtaking 900 year old fortress Festung Hohensalzburg: the magnificent edifice that dominates the city’s skyline – and is itself framed by the spectacular encirclement of mountains stretching into the horizon.

Taste the Kleiner Brauner, Melange or Einspänner, which are coffee specialities in Salzburg. Accompany them with cake or pastries such as a piece of Sacher Torte chocolate cake, apple strudel or a Salzburger Nockerl soufflé.

Have a walk through Salzburg’s famous streets and window-shopping in the historic city
center, Austria’s most beautiful shopping centre featuring the latest fashions, traditional costumes or sweet souvenirs. Salzburg will leave no wish unfulfilled.

  • "Excellent choice of travel "
the journey from Zurich to Salzburg in the second class compartment was really comfortable with plenty of luggage space and the train arrived on time and the journey had spectacular views.
  • "Munich to Salzburg"
I pre-booked this trip from Singapore. I was able to collect the ticket from their Singapore office immediately after booking. Arriving in Munich, finding my seat number was easy and it was reserved for me. The train left and arrived on time and the entire trip was smooth. The staff who check the tickets were also polite.
  • "From Zurich to Salzburg"
The train was punctal. In Zurich HB, the platform is only shown on screen 30min before the journey.
  • "Smooth transition"
This was a smooth transition from bus to train. It made the 7 hour total trip less monotonous to change from bus to train when coming from Venezia. Train was comfortable and beautifully scenic through the alps. Also watching the subtle changes in houses between Italy and Austria was interesting.
  • "Feed back "
We traveled by euro rail from Vienna - Salzburg - Innsbruck - Munich - Paris ( TGV ) in the 2nd week of August. Our experience in travelling in Eurorail had been excellent all along.
  • "Austria Travel"
Great way to travel within Austria and perfect for Vienna City connections.
  • "fine"
The trip was fine although the train was very full at the beginning. Later it became more comfortable. Booking the tickets on the net was a little difficult and the English of the site was rather poor. It would help people to find what they need if you asked a native speaker to correct it. Also, it'd be easier and cheaper if the tickets were sent electronically instead of having to pay for the expensive postage. But the service was very good and I appreciated that someone came up to chat on the net when I was having difficulties in booking. Thank you, Csilla Bertha
  • "delay for one hour"
Delay for one hour and no any explainations. Sitting in the train without any air condition was a very bad exprience, No any staff helped custmers to transfer.
  • "Great train trip to Salzburg"
My wife and I traveled to Salzburg from Vienna on railjet. The journey was fantastic and we reached Salzburg in a little over 2 hours. We returned the same day after soaking in the sights of the incredibly beautiful Salzburg. I wish there were some signboards in English for people like us in the train stations. Philip, Singapore
  • "Unpleasant experience"
I booked first class tickets and received a third world experience. The coach was extremely shabby and dingy with very poor seating. Instead of getting a meal (as I had understood we would get according to the website) we were offered the chance to purchase (?) a sandwich which was one of the most unpleasant food experiences of my life. In addition train staff were constantly wandering through the coach making unnecessary noise and disturbance. Altogether a massive disappointment which was vastly over priced. The only good part was the end.
  • "Railjet - Austria "
It was a good experience to travel by train , We enjoyed the trip and view of the country side.
  • "European Holiday"
We have been travelling around Europe for the last eight weeks by rail. It's been a very affordable mode of travel and without any problems . I will use rail Europe again on our next holiday
  • "Value for money"
we enjoyed or trip from Salzburg to Zurich - we had a first class pass and would thoroughly recommend the extra money - ! But please note the seats we paid to be reserved were not reserved for us on any of our trips !
So, I was not allowed to choose my seats as selections were done by computer when I booked online - TERRIBLE!! On my journey to Salzburg the computer gave me a seat where I was seating backwards! My head was spinning throughout the journey and the seats were stiff and hard. I also had to squint my eyes to see the numbers of the seats. NEVER AGAIN! I'd rather fly!
  • "No problem trip"
Booked from Hong Kong, I received my ticket in 24hrs and was able to get on the train with no problems from Salzburg to Budapest.
