While you're there

A high-tech metropolis with the charm of a village, quirky Helsinki is a Nordic gem. See world-class architecture, spectacular scenery and island hideaways by day then try buzzing restaurants and the coolest bars by night.

Helsinki can boast about offering 79 museums to the visitors, among which the largest historic museum of the Finnish Capital, the National Museum of Finland, housed in a neo-romantic monument.

Reach the Senate Square where you will find the Government Palace, the University and the famous neo-classic and Lutheran cathedral just behind the statue of Alexander II of Russia. A visit of the "Suomenlinna" (Finland fort) islands which are on UNESCO Heritage list, is essential during your journey. Those old fortifications located in the port were originally built to protect the city against the Russians.

Don’t leave Helsinki without tasting the typically Finnish main-course the "Poronkaristys" (a reindeer stew) with a glass of "Glögi", a delicious mulled wine.

Restaurants using local food and in-season produce in Helsinki are complemented by various food events organized by active local community groups. One of the leading events is the Restaurant Day that is held several times during the year and when anybody can set up a pop-up restaurant for a day. Flavoursome Finnish food can also be sampled at the Helsinki Menu restaurants. Check out The Abattoir (Teurastamo), which offers local food and various events in a historic redbrick setting.
